Your Software Development job questions, answered

What programming languages does a Software Developer use most?

Java, Python, React, and TypeScript are the most commonly used programming languages among Software Developers. However, depending what type of Software Developer you are, you may want to pick up skills in other languages.
Front End Developers mostly focusing on the design aspect tend to have React, Angular, Vue, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS in their arsenal, while Back End Developers working on coding and integration typically use .NET, C#, SQL, Java, PHP, Python, AWS, Azure, CI / CD. Full Stack Developers will use a combination of both.

What Software Development skills are most in demand?

Competition is fierce for developers with skills in Java, Python, C++, JavaScript, C#, .net, and React Native.
Additionally, the use of cloud-based technologies and DevOps has grown rapidly, causing demand for AWS, Docker, Kubernetes and GCP skills to rise.

What can I expect to earn as a Software Developer?

Software Developer salaries will vary according to experience, industry, and location. Salaries for those in development/design roles typically average between HKD $350 - 840K across Full Stack, Mobile, Server-side, and Front End Developers.

What can I expect in interviews for Software Developer jobs?

As it’s a highly technical job, expect a rigorous coding skills assessment or an interactive coding interview. Technical questions will also come up in your interview, alongside questions that are designed to assess soft skills like reasoning and problem-solving. A HR interview to assess for fit will typically follow.

What are the biggest Software Development trends in 2022?

The industry will continue to grow, given that organisations are ramping up on their digital transformation plans. Good Software Developers and DevOps professionals – already in short supply – will be in high demand.
Investment in AI is also continuously growing as organisations want to make use of Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing. More developers will be needed to build AI functionality into software applications, so any training and experience you have in this area will be highly valuable. Developments in microservices architecture, IoT, and cloud computing will also create a need for more development expertise in these areas.
