My client is a real estate organisation that has been around for over 75 years that engages in development whilst managing a portfolio of investment properties around the region.
Your new role
The General Counsel will provide strategic legal advice and support to the executive management team. This role involves overseeing all legal aspects of construction matters, real estate transactions, development projects, and corporate governance. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in construction law, real estate law, strong leadership skills, and the ability to manage complex legal matters.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal input into corporate strategy, business planning and major commercial decisions; anticipate legal and regulatory risks and propose pragmatic mitigation strategies.
- Advise the management team on governance, regulatory compliance, public law issues, and high‑value transactions; prepare clear briefings and board papers.
- Review high-value and complex commercial contracts and provide legal support to business units alongside with external legal advisors.
- Review legal aspects of construction projects, including contract strategy, risk allocation, claims management, performance bonds, and dispute avoidance.
- Advice on matters involving administrative law, statutory interpretation, public procurement rules, licencing etc.
- Maintain compliance frameworks, align internal policies on legal issues,
- Oversee the performance of external counsel on various issues including dispute resolution, arbitration and court proceedings.
- Work closely with business units to achieve business objectives while protecting the organisation’s legal and reputational interests.
- Provide training and guidance to employees on legal matters.
- Manage relationships with external law firms and other industry bodies.
Requirements
- A law degree from an accredited institution.
- Admission to the Law Society in Hong Kong.
- 15+ years in a law firm and/or corporate legal department.
- Expertise in commercial contracts, construction contracts and public law.
- Strong negotiation, communication and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in legal research. Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments and manage multiple projects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
