Growing job opportunities for Architects in Hong Kong and China

Updated: 24 Apr 2014

Hong Kong registered Architects are finding themselves in high demand locally and for projects in second and third tier cities in China, says recruiting experts Hays in Hong Kong.

According to Hays, both local and international firms are recruiting candidates in the fields of architecture and design.

“Local firms focus more on project implementation while international firms are competing in concept design,” says Marc Burrage, Regional Director of Hays in Hong Kong.

“Hong Kong registered Senior Architects are highly sought after to join a number of established local developers and architectural practices. Foreign registered Architects with strong design skills or exposure to well known projects can find opportunities in international design teams across the region.

“We are also seeing strong demand for Project Managers as a number of first tier developers continue to invest and develop projects in Mainland China. In most cases, these positions include accommodation and tax equalisation benefits as well as return flights for the family.

Opportunities also exist for talented Hospitality Interior Designers with high-end hospitality design experience, says Marc. “We currently have openings with hoteliers, developers and design consultants in Hong Kong and Greater China. The projects vary from hotels, large residential developments and up market restaurants.”

Hong Kong continues to be a market dominated by interior design and build projects in the corporate space. Candidates with experience working on the relocation of large corporate offices and/or new office design and planning will find opportunities with external design firms and internal organisations.

“We are currently seeing international firms focusing on investing in sustainable design methodology and Building Information Modelling (BIM) in order to offer additional value to their services,” says Marc.

“Moving forward, we expect to see a shortage of candidates with qualifications in these areas, which is likely to create demand for overseas talent.”
