Hotspots

Urban Planners are sought in China's architecture market in response to the urbanisation and development of second and third-tier cities. Interior Design Directors are needed given the upsurge in hospitality projects. Finally, Project Architects are in demand due to increased building activity in second and third-tier cities.

The coming quarter

Feedback from employers indicates the number of architectural jobs will rise in 2010. As the economy improves, we also anticipate an increase in interior design vacancies.

Employer trends

While for most of 2009 employers were extremely fastidious in their candidate expectations, towards the end of the year they relaxed their stringency due to their more immediate needs. Employers now have some flexibility surrounding candidate expectations since high-level skills are in demand. The demand for mid-level candidates is yet to reach 2007 levels.

Candidate trends

Towards the end of 2009, a large number of candidates started to express an interest in changing jobs once more. Many plan to secure a new position after Chinese New Year and the allocation of annual bonuses.
