RECESSION-PROOF SKILLS
Why employers want sales and marketing professionals
Mid to senior level sales professionals are wanted as companies seek to improve profits, says a leading recruiter.
“Top sales people are recession-proof, especially those with a proven track record of delivery, strong customer focus and industry-specific knowledge,” said Emma Charnock, Regional Director of Hays in Hong Kong. “They are valued in good times and bad because they bring in revenue and strengthen business relationships.
“Those industries currently recruiting additional sales staff include information technology, retail and FMCG. But it’s not just traditional sectors where sales skills are valued. Lenders in the banking sector for example are recruiting business development and sales professionals in a bid to gain market dominance. Property sales and leasing roles have also increased as funds organisations and developers look to generate revenue through sales in a credit tight market.
“Candidates are aware of the demand for sales professionals, and so over recent months the number of entry-level applicants has risen.
“But employers want proven performers. They are recruiting sales professionals at the mid and senior levels and place value in experience and a proven ability to deliver results. Employers believe entry-level candidates are unable to deliver quick results, and so they are unwilling to take a chance on them.
“This need to add immediate value means employers will reward sales candidates on performance, with some base to OTE ratios at 50 percent,” she said.
Hays Sales & Marketing also reports an increased number of marketing communications vacancies. “Employers are recruiting external communications professionals with PR and media relations skills,” says Charnock. “This is because organisations are recognising that now is the time to ensure their brand is front of mind with existing and new customers in order to increase their market share for the economic recovery.”
In other areas of marketing demand, Emma says project managers and senior product managers are sought by FMCG employers. “The food and beverage segment in particular has increased its demand for experienced project managers. Candidates with regional experience are valued most highly, and are likely to receive strong packages,” she said.
