INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE HELPS YOUR CAREER

International experience is a major help to your career, according to a survey by specialist recruiter Hays. 80% of over 700 respondents said international experience had made a ‘real’ difference (69%) or ‘some’ difference (11%) to their careers. Just one in five respondents said international experience made no difference to their career.

“In our experience, employers place significance on local candidates who have gained international experience and exposure because they value the adaptability it requires and the broadened understanding and access to different systems, methods and practices that it provides,” said Jacky Carter, Director of Hays.

“Local candidates don’t necessarily have to gain international experience in their field for it to be a benefit to their career when they arrive home. Employers understand it can be difficult to get work in your field overseas without prior work experience in that country, but the actual experience of working overseas in itself can be a very positive step in your career,” she said.

“However with many outstanding candidates heading overseas for the experience, it does put added pressure on a market already experiencing skills shortages. Most sectors now experience candidate shortages and this is not helped by the constant stream of candidates seeking an overseas experience,” said Jacky.

The survey was conducted on www.hays.com.au and received 732 responses.
